In collaboration with the Gauteng Department of Social Development (GDSD), Sukuma Sakhe Development is implementing a Mobile ECD Programme. This is done to enable governmental and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to provide quality education to children in under-resourced areas. The mobility of this programme ensures that a greater proportion of those in need are reached as the mobile ECD centres travel from one community to the next.

These mobile ECDs are in the form of brightly coloured busses equipped with educational material, children’s toys, computers with educational digital resources, and a television and DVD player for educational programmes.  Additionally, these vehicles are equipped with sick-bays for children who may not feel well on any given day, a kitchen to prepare meals for beneficiaries, and a toilet.

Trained preschool teachers travel with the busses to various communities. The teachers have lesson plans for children between the ages of two and six years, and they also create different games and stories with toys as this has been found to be a significant learning experience for children.
